For nearly two decades, fans of Reading Rainbow have longed for its return. Now, the wait is finally over. The groundbreaking children’s literacy series is officially making a comeback — and it’s bringing a new face to the helm: Mychal Threets, the beloved librarian and literacy advocate who has captured hearts across social media.
The new Reading Rainbow will launch on October 4, 2025, as a four-episode short-form series. Episodes will drop weekly on KidZuko (Sony Pictures Television’s YouTube channel) and at ReadingRainbow.org, making the show widely accessible to today’s digitally native kids. While the classic half-hour format may be gone, the reboot embraces fresh storytelling styles with vertical video, interactive projects, and other engaging features designed for younger audiences.
Known online as Mychal the Librarian, Threets has been an outspoken champion for libraries, community, and the joy of reading. For him, stepping into the role once held by LeVar Burton is a dream come true.
“LeVar Burton is my hero … Reading Rainbow showed us we belong in books, we belong everywhere,” Threets shared.
With his passion for literacy and gift for connecting with children, Threets is uniquely positioned to carry the show’s mission forward.
The reboot won’t just rely on nostalgia. Celebrity narrators and guests like John Legend, Gabrielle Union, Chrissy Teigen, and Adam DeVine are set to bring their voices and star power to the series. Expect a mix of storytelling, music, and interactive experiences that expand beyond the screen — from postcards to sidewalk library projects.
After 20 years, Reading Rainbow is back — not just as a revival, but as a movement to inspire a new generation of readers. And with Mychal Threets leading the way, the legacy of wonder, curiosity, and storytelling is in good hands. 🌟
